Valuations explained

What affects a vehicle, caravan or plant valuation?

A useful valuation starts with accurate facts. Age matters, but condition, paperwork, demand, transport and the cost of putting an asset right can matter just as much.

The asset itself

Make, model, year, specification and current market demand create the starting point. For road vehicles we also consider mileage and MOT status. For plant, the serial number, operating hours, attachments and working functions are especially important.

Condition and known faults

Mechanical problems, damp, accident damage, structural issues, missing parts and long periods in storage can all affect value. An honest description is more useful than a polished advert because it helps estimate repair, recovery and resale risk before anyone travels.

Paperwork and ownership

V5C, CRiS information, purchase invoices, serial numbers, keys, service records and finance status help identify the asset and establish the seller's authority. Missing paperwork does not always end an enquiry, but valid ownership must still be demonstrated.

Location and collection

A running vehicle on a clear driveway is different from a seized machine in a wet field or a static caravan behind restricted access. Distance, dimensions, weight, loading space, road access and recovery equipment can change the practical cost of purchase.

Why can an initial figure change?

A valuation given from a description or photographs is provisional. Undeclared faults, incorrect specifications, missing items, finance or access problems may alter the assessment when evidence or inspection provides a different picture.

Information to send first

  • Asset type, make, model and approximate year.
  • Registration, serial number, mileage or operating hours.
  • Current condition and every significant known fault.
  • MOT, service, repair and finance information where relevant.
  • Clear recent photographs, including damage and identification plates.
  • Exact postcode, standing surface and collection restrictions.

How to get a more useful first response

Give the facts once, in a clear order, and avoid guessing where you do not know. Photos in good daylight, a short fault history and accurate access details reduce uncertainty and make it easier to decide whether a direct purchase is practical.
